THE CHALLENGE WE ARE ADDRESSING
Children and young people across Nigeria and Africa face growing risks every day; at home, in their communities, on playgrounds, and in recreational spaces. Accidents, injuries, and medical emergencies can happen anywhere, yet the vast majority of children have not gained any first aid or emergency preparedness skill. Evidence highlights the scale of the challenge:
∙ 93.8% of Nigerian school-age children have experienced injuries, with incidents occurring across playgrounds, homes, and community environments
∙ 32–68% of children and adolescents across sub-Saharan Africa experience serious injuries within any 12-month period (Global School-based Student Health Survey)
∙ Common emergencies affecting children include falls, choking, burns, fractures, bleeding, seizures, asthma attacks, allergic reactions, and fainting, many of which are preventable or manageable with basic first aid knowledge.
